Dear Patients,

We hope this message finds you and your families well amidst this growing pandemic. As you well know, the dental community nationwide has taken steps to slow the spread of COVID-19. The Indiana Dental Association has now fully endorsed recent ADA recommendations to cease all elective dental procedures for three full weeks, effective immediately.

Dr’s Stevenson, Fairchild, and Surber have heard these recommendations and will be following suit. We are working to cancel all elective procedures including new consultations and routine follow-up appointments during this time.

As oral and maxillofacial surgeons we understand our position in the management of emergent needs to prevent patients inundating emergency rooms and immediate care clinics. To cope, we will maintain shortened office hours at our Valparaiso location to assess emergency patients from our referrals and greater dental community. Thank you all in advance. We are all in this together.

Missing all upper or lower teeth? You have comfortable choices in Valparaiso & Merrillville, IN!

Most people would rather not have the impairment – aesthetic or functional – of missing all upper or lower teeth. Yet a common complaint of denture wearers is poor stability. A traditional “floating” denture is held in place only by suction or gooey adhesive. It can slip, wobble, rub sore spots, or pop out unexpectedly. The oral surgeons at Stevenson, Fairchild & Surber OMS in Valparaiso & Merrillville, IN offer multiple solutions for a full set of teeth with comfortable, confident fit and attractive appearance.

Options in Valparaiso & Merrillville, IN for missing all upper or lower teeth

A dental implant is an artificial tooth root made from a strong, biocompatible material. When an implant is placed into a prepared site in the bone, it becomes solidly fused. This characteristic makes dental implants ideal for denture stabilization.

The following techniques can be used with a full lower or upper denture. However, since bone in the upper arch is not generally as hard, more implants could be needed. An implant-supported upper denture often does not cover the palate. Thus, it is lighter, more comfortable, and does not impede taste or temperature sensation.

  • Overdentures – Implants are placed towards the front of the mouth, often two to four depending on bone available and stability requirements.  After a healing period, the denture is adapted to “snap” into the implants and aid in chewing and retention.  Often times, a support bar is fabricated and customized to the shape of your jaw which adds even more stability while still allowing the denture to be easily removable.
  • Screw-retained denture – The best and most efficient way to replace all missing teeth.  In this procedure (TeethXpress), four implants are placed, then fitted with abutments (posts) which have threaded openings.  The restorative dentist then secures the denture in place with mini-screws so that it is fixed.  A dental professional can remove it for maintenance visits. Meanwhile you keep the denture and your mouth clean with brushing and flossing techniques similar to caring for a dental bridge.  This is the most cosmetic and functional full mouth rehabilitation option where teeth are replaced in a single day with a single surgery.
  • Individual implants – With careful planning and sufficient bone, you may choose to have all teeth in an arch replaced with individual implants. This is an extremely natural-looking option. Restorations feel and perform like your own teeth and require only normal oral hygiene. Full dental implants cost is typically more than an implant-supported denture.

Dentists may advertise dental implants and handle a few stand-alone restorations each year. Stevenson, Fairchild & Surber OMS, however, are experts in implant surgery and more advanced and complicated cases. Call (219) 307-4382 in the Valparaiso – Merrillville, IN area. We have solutions for nearly anyone missing all upper or lower teeth.
